Mount Kinabalu’s summit (known as Low’s Peak) height at 4,095.2 metres (13,438 ft) above sea level, at the coordinate 6°5′N 116°33′E. First ascent was completed during March 1851 while the first successful attempt to reach the peak was completed by John Whitehead in 1881. The starting route for this Mount Kinabalu climb package is from Timpohon Gate.

 

How Long Does It Take?

If you’re wondering how long does it take to conquer the Mount Kinabalu climb, the climbing process normally takes only 6 – 9 hours up and 3 – 6 hours down which is why we schedule this over at least 2 days and 1 night (but it might be longer depending on your selected schedule and your other arrangements, if any). Depending on your mount kinabalu climb package, lunch could be provided in a packaged container while your dinner will be provided at dining area at Laban Rata Resthouse.

During the first day, you climb up to Laban Rata Resthouse from the starting point at Timpohon Gate (pictured right). Laban Rata is the place for you to relax, have dinner and take a nap before starting to climb up to the summit starting at 2 AM.

The climb from Laban Rata to peak of Mount Kinabalu takes about 2 to 4 hours depending on your walking speed, stamina and physical condition.

The best time to reach the summit is approximately 5:30 to at 6 AM on the second day. Once you reach the peak, you can take pictures and then start climbing back down to Laban Rata, it will take about 1 to 2 hours depending on your walking speed and stamina.

Kindly note, if you suffer with certain medical conditions you will be required to obtain medical clearance from your doctor to certify that you are able to proceed with the Mount Kinabalu climb activity at a high altitude of above 3000m above sea level.

Sabah Park highly recommended that people should refrain from the Mount Kinabalu Climb if they have any of the following:

  • Severe Anemia

  • Epileptic Fits
  • Obesity (Overweight)

  • ..or any other disease which may hamper the climber.

 

There are no physical health checks upon registration in Kinabalu Park and those who wish to proceed for the Mount Kinabalu climb will have to climb at their own risk.

Mount Kinabalu Climb Via Ferrata Information

Via Ferrata (or “iron road” in Italian) is a protected path along a mountain covering a series of rails and cables on a rock face. During a Via Ferrata activity it allows hidden access to scenic parts of Mount Kinabalu that the normal route does not see.

The Via Ferrata experience during the Mount Kinabalu climb should not be missed as it is the world’s highest and Asia’s first Via Ferrata that begins at 3,200m and ends off at 3,776m above sea level. Pretty much anyone can take part in this activity as long as you are fit and healthy and between the ages of 10 – 70 and at least 1.3metres tall.

As long as you make it for the safety briefing by 3pm then you will experience Mount Kinabalu in a very exciting way.

Via Ferrata Mount Kinabalu climb

Walk The Torq

For those that don’t have much time and are at least 10 years old you are able to try the Via Ferrata Walk the Torq activity. After climbing to the peak of Mount Kinabalu you will begin your descent down and meet your via ferrata trainer at Sayat Sayat Hut @ 3,668m above sea level around 7.15am and start the introductory to the Via Ferrata. This is the equivalent to French grade PD.

On completion of this route you will be rewarded with a certificate of achievement.

KEY FACTS

The Highest point of the Walk the Torq activity is at 3,520m above sea level. The length of route is 430m and the vertical height traverse is 109m.

Lows Peak

Lows Peak route is definitely the more challenging of the both routes available as you need to be at least 16 years old to try this activity. This activity starts at 7.5KM at 6.30am after descending down from the summit. The Via Ferrata trainer will be waiting for you so that you can experience 4 – 5 hours (French grade AD) of adrenaline action of thread-like tightrope walks and swinging planks from start to finish.  The highest point is at 3776metres above sea level with the route 1.2KM long with the the vertical traverse height at 365metres.

HIGHLIGHTS of Lows Peak

  • Possibly the world’s highest suspension bridge at ˜3,600m above sea level
  • One of the world’s highest Nepalese bridge at 3,580m above sea level
  • The Lows Peak route connects to the Walk the Torq route, so that you don’t miss anything!

 

Via Ferrata Mount Kinabalu climb

NOTE:

  • Reservation is based on minimum 1 PERSON to go.
  • Transportation will be based on SEAT IN COACH. For private van charters please contact us.
  • Seat in Coach, is the term used for sharing in transfer or tour, therefore guests that are in SIC basis will be sharing vehicle and have other tourist with them on the tour. There are maybe multiple pickups & drop-offs throughout the journey. Do expect some short waiting time.
